Ways To Give

The Foundation for Ellis Medicine is an independent 501(c)(3) organization governed by its own Board of Trustees. The Foundation's mission is to increase philanthropy, awareness, and advocacy for Ellis Medicine to ensure and support quality lifesaving healthcare in our community.  Gifts to Ellis will remain with the Foundation and serve the greater Schenectady region, regardless of any future merger.

Gifting Assets

Appreciated assets—such as stocks and retirement funds—can be powerful ways to maximize your charitable impact while offering potential tax advantages. Donor Advised Funds are another flexible option to support your philanthropic goals.

Stocks that have significantly increased in value or produce low income are often the most beneficial to gift. If you sell appreciated assets held for more than one year, you may owe long-term capital gains tax. However, transferring those assets directly to a nonprofit, such as The Foundation for Ellis Medicine, may help you avoid that tax. To realize these benefits, the stock must be transferred before it is sold.

Giving through your IRA | Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

If you are 70½ or older, making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA is a smart and meaningful way to give. When your gift is made directly from your IRA to Ellis Medicine, the amount is not counted as taxable income, which can reduce your overall tax burden.

If you are 73 or older, your QCD can also satisfy part or all of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year. Most importantly, your gift has an immediate impact on the care and support Ellis provides to patients and families every day. Download instructions and a sample letter to request your QCD.

Gifts of Real Estate

Gifts of real estate are accepted at the discretion of the Foundation Board. While outright, unencumbered property is preferred, bargain sales—where property is sold for less than its fair market value—may be considered when aligned with the Foundation’s best interests.

Real estate gifts are recognized based on the property’s appraised value at the time of transfer, minus any outstanding debts or obligations.

For more information, call the Foundation office at 518.243.4600.

Corporate Partner Spotlight:

Fenimore Asset Management

Fenimore Asset Management logo

Fenimore Asset Management has long supported Ellis Medicine, driven by a shared commitment to the health and well-being of both employees and the communities they serve. That commitment traces back to the values established by founder Thomas O. Putnam in 1974: a research-driven, quality-focused, and disciplined investment approach, paired with service excellence. Those principles closely align with the foundations of healthcare itself — best practices, an unwavering focus on quality, and a dedication to meaningful, measurable outcomes.

By adhering to these values, Fenimore has thrived for more than five decades. The same values-based perspective shapes how Fenimore engages with and supports organizations that strengthen individuals and families throughout the region, including its longstanding and valued partnership with Ellis Medicine.

Fenimore's support of Ellis extends beyond sponsorships to strategic investments in capital and services that promote continuity of care, provide clinical reassurance, and lead to better health outcomes for all who turn to Ellis for care. Together, this partnership reflects a shared, forward-looking commitment to long-term health, stability, and peace of mind for the community.

Anne Putnam, CEO of Fenimore Asset Management

"Ellis Hospital has been essential to the fabric of Schenectady since before I moved to the city," said Anne Putnam, CEO of Fenimore Asset Management. "Their work in quality healthcare makes a positive impact on the community — practitioners and patients. Fenimore is proud to support their mission, both for today and future generations."

Through the leadership and generosity of partners like Fenimore Asset Management, Ellis is able to deliver outstanding, high-quality care with strength, stability, and compassion. Fenimore's commitment not only reflects deep respect for the people of our community but also reinforces the capacity of the health system to meet today's needs while preparing for the future. Together, this partnership ensures that individuals and families across the Capital Region can rely on trusted care — today and for generations to come.
